The parents’ guide to Tadcaster – 12 ways to spend your day

1. Tadcaster’s beaches

Yes, Tadcaster has beaches! Well, nothing like St Tropez, but there are a couple of spots down the river that are ideal for the little ones to have a paddle in…

The first beach is visible from the bridge as you look over towards St Mary’s church and the viaduct and the second beach you will find in the fields beyond the riverside path and through the kissing gate. Walk just ten minutes through the field (which is doable with a pram if you don’t mind a bit of dirt) and you will come to an easily accessible “beach”.

2. Walker’s Kitchen

Upstairs at Walker’s kitchen is perfect for those playdates where parents can catch up with each other and the kids can be entertained by the variety of books and toys including Lego.

The Manager at Walker’s – Jules – has thought of everything. There’s a sofa – ideal for breastfeeding mums, there’s cheap options for kids’ meals with nothing over £5.95 and there’s even a door to ensure privacy from other diners and ensure no escapees.

And don’t worry about hearing the word “stairs”. Prams can be folded up and left downstairs or in the alleyway next door.

3. Charity Shop Bargains

The Charity Shops in Tadcaster have a constant stream of donations from lots of local families so they’re shelves are always worth a rummage.

All books are 20p and toys and clothing are 50p in the TVCSA shop on Kirkgate and you can often find brand new, unused items still with tags. Head to Hidden Treasures next to St Mary’s churchyard and you can pick up larger goods such as small furniture items and outdoor toys for the price of a coffee!

4. Tadcaster’s Beer Gardens

The Jackdaw pub on Stutton road is perfect for those afternoons when you just want a quiet pint but need to entertain the kids. The pub has a playground, playhouses and a little coop for the kids to look at the hens. In the summer you can while away hours supping in the sunshine whilst the little ones bounce about on their huge inflatable bouncy castle.

Tadcaster Community Sports Trust (formerly Tadcaster Magnets) boasts a beautifully maintained beer garden with plenty of space for children to run free. The secure, enclosed area means little ones can play safely while you relax with a drink and watch the cricket or bowling on the adjacent grounds. Pack a football or challenge the kids to timed races around the garden – they’ll love it!

The spacious grounds make this a popular venue for children’s parties, with ample room for bouncy castles and outdoor games.

5. Tadcaster Community Swimming Pool

With approximately 4,000 visitors each week, Tadcaster Community Swimming Pool is one of the region’s most popular swimming and fitness venues. Established in 1994 on land provided by Samuel Smith’s Brewery, who also funded its construction, this clean and welcoming facility is run predominantly by dedicated volunteers.

The pool offers an impressive range of activities for children, from competitively priced “Millionaire” pool parties and rubber duck races to toddler classes and junior swim squads. Reasonable pricing ensures families across Tadcaster can enjoy swimming regardless of budget, making it one of the town’s most valuable community assets.

6. Tadcaster’s Horses

Tadcaster has a special connection with horses that captures the hearts of locals and visitors alike. Samuel Smith Brewery’s magnificent Shire horses clip-clop through the streets on their traditional deliveries five days a week. For times when you want to look at horses for a bit longer than a passing glance, there are plenty of local fields to visit where you can admire their beauty from a distance. Head to Stutton village and you often will spot horses and other farm animals in the many farmer’s fields. There’s also a scenic and pram-friendly circular route along Wetherby Road and up to Smaws wood (looping back via Leeds Road) with several paddocks where horses graze contentedly.
